Optical communications are already a thing, using infra-red instead of Radio Frequencies (RF). These are tightly focused infra-red beams.

You can transmit much more data through optical communications than through RF communications and you don’t need a license for optical communications.

Optical communications are much harder to intercept and decode.

Obviously to send and receive optical communications, your optical transceiver needs to be pointing in the right direction – line of sight comms once more.
