Is Zombie Apocalypse Gaming Sci-Fi?

 We all know zobies want to eat your brains, and when it happens we have to stab them in the head as quickly as possible and avoid being overwhelmed by the shambling masses of the undead.

But, even though its a future what if kind of thing, as is all sci-fi, does that make it sci-fi in of itself. 

The reason I bring this up is because I am currently binge re-watching The Walking Dead which is free if you have Amazon Prime here in the UK. 

Its a near future, or ultra-modern, or here and now what would happen if this happens kind of thing. There is no new technology, no spacefaring, no laser blasters, no alien flora and fauna to contend with, or bug swarms on strange new planets, or Xenormorphs with phallus heads.

Its just how would people survive in the here and now at the collapse of civilisation as we know it.

So is this sci-fi or is apocalypse gaming its own genre? Even though you find apocalypse figures withing sci-fi ranges.

I now want to see a sci-fi zombie series where a strange new zombie virus breaks out on a ship after visiting a strange new planet, and it spreads as the ship makes dock on autopilot or something.
