Cold War Gone Alien

Using Cold War Figures To Fight An Alien Invasion

Given the popularity of Cold War Gone Hot alternative world wargaming, a fun expansion upon that would be too also purchase and paint an alien invasion force.

Whether that be a 1950’s/60’s inspired grey alien invasion force, Predator force versus US forces in Vietnam, Soviet conscripts versus Alien in the deep interior of the Soviet Union, or the Bundeswehr on the North German plains facing an insectoid/arachnid invasion.

There are potentially a lot of options, and if you already have the figures, chances are you will have access to the relevant terrain also.

For a campaign you could hypothesise that the Soviets face an alien invasion deep in their interior and are trying to keep it quiet until they have won because they don’t want to look weak to NATO, but NATO have obviously detected something is going on. The Soviets then start to deploy their nuclear arsenal, and NATO starts getting really nervous and wants to send an expeditionary force, but the Soviet regime won’t allow it as tensions mount along the borders of Europe where west meets east.

Or you could do it the other way around – there is an alien invasion in Alaska, and the Soviets send in an expeditionary force to find out what is going on. Do NATO and Warsaw Pact troops work together on US soil or do they go to war with each other whilst fighting an alien invasion also.

Are there multiple alien invasion sites around the world that lead to anarchy and then a resistance rises up to meet the alien threat after countries, and national military forces have been overwhelmed and disappeared in chaos?

I think there is a lot of potential fun here to game out an alien invasion and even develop a campaign around it during the cold war.

  1. I have a handful of 15mm "Grays" who routinely face off against the an early 1960's US National Guard force, modern Law Enforcement and others. "Grays" are wonderful utility players since they can pair up with many different opponents.

    1. Awesome - sounds great. Thats exactly what i was thinking of - black and white alien invasion movies with grey alien types, with initially local law enforcement, then National Guard and FBI etc.

    2. Another possibility might be that of a small bunch of Greys who showed up in the middle of a brushfire war between two undeveloped groups - tribe vs tribe or tribe vs ineffective governmental forces, or, the Greys arriving in some third world nation largely unnoticed by any major power but then they start "consuming" for lack of a better word the flow of resources out of there that some of the main power players rely on. The main powers didn't have a hand or control of the sites in question, just picked up the "stuff" at trading ports.
