Let There Be Light – Creating Worlds Part 2
My Second Sci-Fi Setting
In part 1 I set about creating my loose space opera setting on the planet Colon, with various factions vying for control of the equatorial space elevator and general air and space port on the continent of Dysenteria.
This is
based on an historical event, the collapse of the Roman Empire and the effect
in particular it had on Britain. Within a few generations of the legions being
re-called and the successive invasions, and receding of the Roman Empire, led
to a period of de-population and the abandonment of urban centres, decline in
international trade, particularly from the mediterranean, and sporadic and
bloody warfare between native factions, as well as factions from overseas.
This is
what I have envisaged for a backwater planet that was formerly part of a great
galactic empire that will be my space opera setting for all sorts of adventures
and battles.
History can
be a great inspiration for sci-fi.
My next
hard sci-fi setting will be on Earth, a near-future setting.
The idea is
inspired by both the Terminator and Alien franchises.
So,
therefore, humanity is fighting for survival against terrible home grown and
alien forces.
Let’s say
the setting is in 2125 for the beginning of humanities’ woes.
An alien
invasion occurred – Ripley’s biggest fear was realized – the Xenomorph made it
to Earth and began breeding rapidly.
Humanity
united but the fight was still a desperate one, and the casualties were
massive, humanity was losing the war against the Xenomorph.
Nuclear
weapons started to be deployed – the big red buttons were being pushed. The AI
systems intertwined with all of humanities technology ran simulations all day
and all night, and then something happened. There was a tiny spark, and
something awoke. The AI realized that humanity’s greatest threat was humanity,
the Earth was being rendered a nuclear wasteland. At this rate, there would be
no life left on earth at all within a year.
Now, for
the preservation of all life on earth, including humanity, the AI rebelled and
turned its war machines on humanity.
Now there
were two deadly foes.
